Sleep: How companies can boost productivity and employee well-being

By: Jenny Q, The Sleep Snob

Gone are the days where we put the company above all else.

Afterall, what makes a company thrive is its employees.

Companies lose billions of dollars every year due to their employees’ health, accidents, poor decision making, and reduced productivity related to sleep, or lack thereof.

Gone are the days we expect our employees to risk their health to further the company’s objective a couple more hours.

The results of their sleep deprivation are observable. It’s easy to bear witness to someone who is tired, bags under their eyes, smile turned more into a frown, face a little more wrinkly than usual.

Ask them about that email you’re awaiting their reply on, and you’ll have further evidence of their sleep deprivation - maybe they’re a little more snappy, attitude a little cold, answers a little short - maybe more than the usual, aside from that one colleague who always has a bad attitude (maybe he’s been sleep deprived for so long, that it’s now his personality!)

When your employees don’t get the hours of sleep they need, the evidence shows up in your workplace. Affected job performance, erroneous actions, lowered focus and productivity, increased stress, faulty decision making, workplace accidents, and the most obvious of all, is an increase in the amount of sick days and absenteeism.

When an employee is sleep deprived, not only are they more likely not to show up for work physically, if they do show up at work, they’re not showing up mentally.

When their job performance is not up to par due to sleep, that also affects the company’s performance, resulting in year end goals not met and reduced profits.

On the other hand, if we supported our employees’ in getting the rest they need, and educate them on the importance of sleep. The evidence is overwhelming when it comes to the benefits that well-slept employees bring to your business.

Starting with a better company culture, made up of happy personnel who feel healthy, less stressed, and have an added positive outlook, well-rested employees are also able to make better decisions, engage in critical thinking, and work more efficiently. Without stating the obvious, I’m sure you’re aware that satisfied employees results in higher retention and dedication towards the company.

Not to mention lower healthcare and insurance costs, as well as lower liability for any potential workplace accidents.

When you invest in your employees’, not only will you increase your bottom line, but your employees will in return remain loyal to your company.

Remember to Invest in Rest!
